Answers:
#1... tearing down SCJR's old cafeteria?
The Sedalia School District is NOT tearing down the Junior High cafeteria building once the new FEMA structure is complete. Once the current construction projects are close to completion (FEMA and Heckart Performing Arts Center), we will weigh the opportunities available for the use of the old cafeteria.
Originally, in 2007, when the FEMA grant was written, the FEMA building was to help provide the space that the SEEK process was trying to provide for the S-C High School. The new building was to be connected to the main bldg. by a new science wing, and S-C Café was going to be torn down to provide the parking that would be lost by those additions.
However, since the enhanced Proposition K.I.D.S. ballot issue passed, there has been NO DISCUSSION of tearing the building down. Clearly, the need for parking has changed now that the building is being used for a Junior High, and only staff need parking spaces.
#2...asbestos?
There is no friable asbestos to speak of in the building. The asbestos has been abated from the tunnel. The floor tiles were tested in 1988 and found negative for ACM content.
The majestic tiger in the main lobby of the Smith-Cotton High School is a permanent new member of the facility. There are no plans for removing this amazing and welcomed gift from an S-C alum.
#4...property sale to Habitat?
At the November 23rd Board meeting, the School Board voted 7-0 to accept the sealed bid of $2,750 for lots 7 & 8 on the corner of Emmet and Walnut (300 E. Walnut St.) This property had not been used by the district and was declared surplus by the Board. The sale of the lots puts that property back on the tax rolls and will become an ongoing income producing source for the district. Additionally, the proceeds from the sale will be used to fund technology supplies for students in the district.
#5... why isn't Graduation at the new high school?
The gym in Smith-Cotton High School will hold a maximum of 2,682 people, if the auxiliary wrestling gym is included. The Mattewson Center will hold 5000 people. The Mattewson Center is typically filled to capacity with friends and relatives of the graduates. If graduation were moved to the new High School gym, tickets would have to be issued to limit the attendance so that the occupancy load would not be exceeded. In such a significant milestone event for our students, the Board of Education did not want to limit who could attend to see their friend or relative go through Commencement.
#6... red light at new high school?
As the Missouri Department of Transportation is responisble for all operation and maintenance of this stop light, the district asks that you refer your concerns to MODOT. Thank you.
